Chief’s Update April 2025

Dear KFN Membership,

On April 1, 2025, the following items were discussed at the regularly held Chief and Council meeting:

Approved $750 sponsorship for the Annual NWT Track and Field event.
Discussed hiring an additional security staff member and implementing potential safety training.
Reviewed outstanding reporting requirements for CIRNAC.
Discussed researching options for new legal representation.
Heard from Colliers regarding community engagement and potential locations for rebuilding the Band Office.

On April 2, 2025, the Chief and Council met with Premier RJ Simpson to discuss drug related issues such as prevention, education, treatment programs, housing initiatives within KFN, and the upcoming closure of Aurora College learning facilities in June 2025.

On April 4, 2025, the Dehcho Woodstove Program had a kickoff event for those in the community, which included a dinner and application support for those interested in participating in the project.

April 8-10, 2025, Katlodeeche had their annual AGM, which included a review of audited financial statements for 2019–2020, 2020-2021, and 2021–2022. Discussions focused on alcohol and drug issues, and the lack of programs and services available to the community. The housing shortage and need for job creation and economic development for members within the community was also discussed. The importance of cultural sensitivity training for KFN employees was also highlighted. Guest speakers included representatives from the NWT Legislative Assembly and the Hay River Health and Social Services Authority.

On April 11, 2025, Chief and Council attended a staff meeting to introduce themselves and hear employee concerns.

On April 15, 2025, The regular Chief and Council meeting was held. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories presented on uranium ore clean-up and future community engagement for fieldwork planning. Council also discussed arranging a meeting with Pine Point Mine and planning a community engagement session.

On April 25, 2025, the Chief and Council met with elders to discuss the election code, KFN Guardians and plans for an upcoming General Band Meeting.
